I work with a number of clients advising on the design / management of PPC campaigns. I typically find that there is somewhat of an obsession amongst clients (particularly those using tools such as Adwords), to enter the highest bid in order to get their ad to the top of the sponsored listings. Often overlooked are two fundamentally important factors:
1. For any one PPC campaign there should be a spread of adverts with differing calls to action and advert text. Analysis of which one was clicked on the most will help the marketer to perfect there PPC adverts and ensure that they are optimised for the target market (thus ensuring maximum click throughs).
2. The importance of the landing page should never be underestimated. Your potential customers is now at your site and this is the only opportunity you may have to convert this click into a sale. One of my recent clients targeted their PPC for printing companies. Notice how I have tailored the landing page so that the customer is given a wealth of information regarding potential suppliers, while giving equal prominence to the quote request form. This page was continually revised until we maximised quote requests for the client (initially the quote request form was very small and at the bottom of the page).
